May 21st Change Log – Feedback Friday Rush

These past hours have been spent attempting to get the game in a playable enough and stable enough state to present to Reddit’s Feedback Friday. No matter how much isn’t there, it will be submitted, but there are a bunch of last minute things that must be done before it’s ready.

  1. Have an option to cleanup all files the game has downloaded.
  2. Player death should not crash the game
  3. Setup a Guest Account and have that be the default.
  4. Throw together a super rudimentary ship selection screen.
  5. Fix the Crew border offset bug.

As of 17:00… Woo! All of that came together a lot faster than I expected. The biggest task was that of not having the game crash when dying, but still managing to clean up all of the objects of the game to avoid memory leaks. I’m not 100% convinced that all of the leaks and objects are cleaned up at the moment, but I don’t expect anyone to be playing the game for more then 20-30 minutes in a single play through, so no big deal.

Definitely something to look at in the very near future though!

May 21st Change Log

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a crash that occurs when the “Computed Shield Remodulation” ability is used.
  • Fixed a crash that occurs when the player dies.
  • Missions end when all enemy ships are defeated.
  • Crew UI effects are no longer offset by an inappropriate amount.
  • Various hangups in regards to menus contacting the server under the hood have been fixed. Users should see appropriate messages when complications with what is being sent arise.

UI and Menus

  • Mission Select
    • Users have the option of selecting one of three missions.
      • The missions do not offer any differences besides the ship the player uses at the moment.
    • After the current mission is completed (either because of player death or through defeating all enemies) the player is returned to this screen.

Temporary Work

  • Temporary Fixes for Feedback Friday
    • Pressing Enter at the Title Screen will randomize the RNG.
    • Pressing DEL at the Title Screen will delete all game files from the device.

Weapons

  • Beam Arrays
    • Plasma Beam Array Mk II
      • A slightly improved version of the Plasma Beam Array.
      • Added for demonstration purposes and to tweak the difficulty of the combat for the demo.

Graphical Effects

  • Nebula
    • Nebula sprites with jagged edges have been smoothed out, and will not longer create out of place looking lines in space.
    • Nebula are now more often larger and more spread out than before.
    • The nebula color palette was not the full range of colors and therefore the redness of all nebula have been potentially decreased.
    • There is a small chance that the location takes place inside of a nebula. This is a purely cosmetic change now.
      • When this occurs, the majority of the combat space will be covered in this nebula.
  • Beam Arrays
    • Once again, Beam Arrays have a new effect. While it uses the same graphic, some positional issues have been fixed. I still haven’t tracked down exactly why the static is not symmetrical, but I’m getting there.
